Los Pinguinos
Natural Monument
Located within the Magellan Strait, 35 km (21.8 mi) from the city
of Punta Arenas. It is a wilderness area created in August of 1966
as a National Park and reclassified as a Natural Monument in 1982.
This natural reserve's objective is to protect the bird life that inhabits the area
such as penguins, cormorants, and sea gulls. Here you will find one of the major penguin
colonies of Southern Chile, whose population is an estimated 60 thousand pairs of
Magellanic penguins, which comprises more than 95% of the Avifauna Biomass. Year after
year more than 60 thousand pairs of penguins return to the island to nest in the same
caves that they built. Between October and March, the majority of them are visible,
occupying the entire island, turning it into a unique and incomparable landscape.
