Colina Hot Springs is the ideal resting place if you are in Santiago
for business or pleasure or even if you are a permanent resident.
The hot springs are located only 25 miles (40 km) north of the capital
city and 2,952 ft (900 m) above sea level, surrounded by mountains
on all sides. Spend a weekend away in this peaceful oasis to cure
the stresses caused by daily city life. It is also ideal for spending
quality time with the family.
This thermal center is located within a military precinct but is
open to the public and accessible year round. Be aware that one
can only enter the hot springs area in a private vehicle.
To get there you must first come to the town of Colina and then
continue 3 more kilometers towards the Esmeralda area until you
see the detour that takes you to the hot springs. The road is in
good condition, one section is paved and the rest is gravel.
The hot springs boast a solid infrastructure made up of thermal
baths, an outdoor pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, gym, restaurant, and game
room. There is also a picnic area and outdoor natural pools.
The thermal waters come from a nearby stream that descends a ravine.
They are warm waters, averaging temperatures between 77°F and
86°F (25º and 30ºC) and are mostly chlorinated, endowed
with sodium chlorosulfates, lime carbonates and 16 units of radium,
thus causing the waters to be somewhat radioactive. They help relieve
arthritis, rheumatism, neuralgia, sinusitis and dermatitis. They
also help combat stress, backaches, and respiratory illnesses.
Among Colina's surroundings you can participate in hikes, nature
and landscape observation, and photography.
If you are more adventurous and would like to try it, visitors
are welcome to participate in an excursion to Mt. Puntiagudo, more
than 656 ft. (200 m) above sea level, leaving from Colina Hot Springs.
The excursion involves crossing various rivers and ravines and is
only recommended for those with experience in hiking. From the peak
of Puntiagudo you can see Cerro Castillo (Castle Hill) and the Mesón
Loma Larga and Cortadera peaks.
