Rio de Los Cipreses National Reserve

With a surface area of 36,882 hectares (81,140 acres), this reserve is the result of a combination of volcanic, glacial and fluvial phenomena. Its main riverbed is the ‘Los Cipreses’ river, which is affluent of the Cachapoal river, but  there are also small lagoons in the highest zones of the park, such as the ‘Agua de la Vida’ lagoon.

Within its limits, there are many different animal and bird species, such as the red fox, the burrowing parrot (endangered species) and the grey fox. But one of the most interesting aspects of the park is the small forests of mountain cypress trees, present in the Urriola sector, where they coexist with terebinth shrubs. Another fascinating aspect is the petroglyphs left by small groups of hunters 5,000 or 8,000 years ago in different parts of the reserve, such as the stone of the Indian. More recently, tales and legends abound concerning the Pincheira brothers, bandits who took shelter in the intricate Andean valleys after their assaults in the early 19th century.
