TO SEE

Among the many attractions of the park, perhaps the most remarkable are the Llaima Volcano, the Sierra Nevada, and the rugged landscapes composed from great lava accumulations, on which you can see islands of vegetation. An important contribution to the beauty of the landscape is the great forest mass of araucaria and the many other species that exist here and the lagoons that reflect pure, clear waters.

TRAILS

Sierra Nevada Trail: 10 kilometers (6 mi) long. Leading to the Sierra Nevada. Several forest types may be observed according to altitude, with excellent views of Conguillio Lake, Llaima Volcano and some glaciers.

Los Carpinteros Trail: 5 kilometers (3 mi) long. The trail passes through coehue, araucaria and lenga forests, and it leads to Captren Lake, rich in bird fauna.

Las Araucarias Self-guiding Educational Trail: Equipped with 12 stations offering information displayed in metal panels with photos. The trail passes through an araucaria forest. Length of the walk: 1 hour.

Las Vertientes Educational Trail: 800 meters (2,624 ft) long. Several underground water brooks spring up along the way.

Cañadon del Truful – Truful Educational Trail: 600 meters (1,968 ft) long, a tour revealing the geological history of the area.

Cerro Colorado Educational Trail: 3 kilometers (1.8 MI) long. It bypasses the west side of the Llaima Volcano. From this trail you can observe the Central Valley and the slag heaps.

FACILITIES

Entrance to the park by Captrén

Lodges and Control Posts: In the park there are Control and Information Posts in the Captren Lake, ‘Agua las Niñas’, and Truful – Truful sectors. The lodges are located in the Curacautin Beach, ‘Arco Iris’ Lagoon, ‘La Invernada’ and ‘Agua Las Niñas' sectors. The Environmental Information Center is located in the ‘Curacautin Beach' sector.

Restrooms: These facilities are located in the ‘Captren Lagoon, ‘Curacautin’ Beach and ‘La Caseta' sectors.

Camping Areas: The campsites are managed directly by the Park Administration.

In La Caseta, there are 20 sites but the only services offered are restrooms. There is no drinkable water. In El Estero, there are 10 sites; they have restrooms and hot and cold water. In Los Carpinteros there are 12 sites with water; they also have restrooms, shared with the Los Ñirres and El Estero sectors. Los Ñirres has 44 sites; it has 3 restrooms with hot and cold water, electric light, and water.
In Captren there is a camping area with 8 sites, with restrooms and cold water; it is located on the southwest bank of the Captren Lagoon, 10 kilometers (6 MI) from the Administration building, at the north entrance to the park.

Picnic areas: In the same sector of the concession, there are 4 dining sites.

Food: there is a store in the ‘Curacautin’ beach sector, where you can buy essential food products.

Other facilities: there is a cafeteria, a store, first aid service, bakery and boat rental.

Ski Center: Las Araucarias Ski Center is located on the slopes of the Llaima Volcano. It has chair lifts and shelters (simple accommodation).

  • Respect and protect the vegetation and fauna of the park. Respect bird nesting areas and natural refuges.
  • Picnic only in designated areas. 
  • Camp only in authorized places.
  • If you see anything strange or unusual, approach a forest ranger or the area administrator.
  • When camping, visitors should use gas or coal stoves.
