Antarctica, Tourist Destination

The Antarctic continent stretches out over an area of 16.5 million
square kilometers. The larger part of Antarctica is covered by ice
whose average thickness is 2,000 meters (6,560 ft). The temperature
in Antarctica has rarely been observed to exceed 10°C for which
it constitutes a world-wide water reserve.
Thanks to the Treaty of Antarctica of 1991, Antarctica is a protected
territory where only scientific investigation and activities not
harmful to the environment are permitted.
The fauna of the Antarctic is rich in marine animals, and it is
possible to observe blue whales, killer whales, sea elephants, Weddell
seals, sea lions, Adelia penguins, Papuan penguins, Antarctic or
Barbiquejo penguins, king penguins, emperor penguins, among others. And
there are also rare species of birds such as the wandering albatross,
the skua, the gigantic petrel, the blue-eyed cormorant, and the
Antarctic dove.
Travel to Antarctica is possible by large boats accustomed to traversing
the wild waters of the Drake Channel.
Generally leaving from Ushuaia in Argentina,
the boats cross the polar circle maneuvering around blocks of ice
and exploring places like Barcroft island,
Peterman island, the ruins of the Finnish
company Ballenera Hektor, Livingston island, and King George Island,
until arriving finally at the President Frei
Chilean base .
