Colbun Lake, extending 5,700 hectares (13,680 acres)
and 1,490,000 cubic meters, is the largest artificial reservoir
in Chile. It was created between 1980 and 1985 with the purpose
of retaining the water that flows from the Maule river, used for
irrigation and hydroelectric energy production.
This lake forms part of a significant hydroelectric circuit that,
aside from Colbun, also includes Melado Lake and Machicura Lake,
each with their respective dams.
The lake's crystalline waters and pleasant temperature are ideal
for water sports. In the summer, the temperature of the water reaches
23°C (73°F) and along with being pollution-free, it is translucent
due to the fact that the Maule River drags very little sediment
from the mountains to the lake.
Located 440 m. (1,443 ft.) above sea level, the atmospheric conditions
here are unique to the region. This microclimate allows residents
to grow all kinds of fruit-bearing trees: such as apple, pear, plum,
peach, khaki (persimmon), walnut, and even avocado trees.
