INTRODUCTION

Torres del Paine National Park

Trekking is a good activity for people of any age or physical condition. It can be practiced as a sport or simply as a pastime that, besides helping to keep the body in shape, allows you to enjoy some of the countryside and nature Chile has to offer.

When and where you choose to trek is completely up to the individual, as it is possible to trek throughout Chile all year round.

BASIC ASPECTS

The basic necessities for trekking are the right shoes and clothes, a rucksack to carry the basic equipment, and a willingness to enjoy the walk.

However, before choosing or preparing for a trek you should consider variables such as: the physical fitness of the participants, the type of terrain, the length of the walk, the amount of water and food needed and the current weather conditions.

Yerba Loca National Sanctuary

For a pleasant walk

  • Carry enough food and water for the trek. At least 2 liters (.5 gallons) of water a day per person.
  • Wear the right clothing for the place and time of year. Wear plenty of layers so you can put them on and take them off according to the temperature and level of activity.
  • Rest 5 minutes per hour.
  • Maintain a constant and relaxed walking rhythm, suited to your own capabilities.
  • Be aware of the typical weather patterns and conditions of the area and monitor the forecasts.

To avoid getting lost

  • Know the routes, distances and time estimations needed to trek them.
  • Keep close to the group.
  • Pay attention to the signs and to landscape features that can be used as points of reference.

Keeping safe

  • If you are not experienced, avoid areas that present a risk of getting lost or with dangerous terrain.
  • Allow extra time in all your calculations so as to avoid walking at night.
  • Be aware that not all water sources are potable.
  • Take the necessary precautions when camping in areas which may contain the hanta virus or vinchucas (a small parasite insect that carries the Chagas disease).
  • Be aware that the litre (Lithraea caustica) is a common tree in the central region of Chile and may cause allergies in some people.
DESTINATIONS. When and where.
Path

The diversity of Chile's geography means that you can trek among different environments, terrain, and climates; from popular places with good infrastructure to wild and unexplored places. Some of the best places for trekking are the protected wild areas that are found throughout the country. These areas, administrated in some cases by the Chilean state and in other cases privately, are interesting and beautiful places to visit, offering information, posted signs, maintained paths, and safe routes.

In most of these parks and reserves an entry charge applies, which is usually used for the maintenance of the area. The entrance fee normally costs around US$2.

Conservation parks are not the only option, however. If you want to explore other places, you need to ask for authorization, and in some cases you will need to pay an entrance fee.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Ecological
Cajon del Maipo

When trekking, please be aware of these suggestions:

  • Be respectful of nature.
  • Do not dump garbage. Whatever you bring, take it with you. If you find garbage and are able to dispose of it properly, it is greatly appreciated.
  • Build fires only in designated areas.
  • Do not take specimens of flora or fauna.
  • If possible walk only on signposted paths.
  • Do not mark or paint on stones or trees. Nobody needs to know that you were there.
  • If you need to go to the toilet, dig a hole 25 cm. (10 in) deep and afterwards, cover it completely. This hole should be located at least 30 meters (98 ft) away from any water supply (rivers, lakes, springs, etc.).

Try not to leave any traces of your visit. This will allow everyone to enjoy such places as nature intended.

Safety

Be aware of three potential problems before you start your trek: accidents, changes in the weather, and getting lost. Therefore,

  • Carry a first aid kit, and wherever possible, go in groups.
  • Overexposure to sunlight carries many risks. Make sure you have adequate sunscreen and appropriate clothing, such as a hat and a long-sleeved top.
  • Inform family or friends and the park-rangers of your intended route.
  • If you get lost, the first and most important thing to remember is to keep calm. If you are in a group, do not split up, and make yourselves easy visible and notice (wear bright clothes, make noise, use a whistle). Check your map and compass and look around for points of reference in the landscape.
EQUIPMENT

The minimum gear you need for trekking is:

  • Adequate and appropriate shoes and clothing for the terrain
  • Hat or baseball cap
  • Map
  • Magnetic compass
  • Water
  • Food
  • Matches
  • First-aid kit
  • Source of light
  • Knife
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun screen lotion
  • Rucksack
